Our garden has heavy clay soil which is perfect for growing roses but not so good for anything else. What can we do?
Heavy clay soils hold too much water for most plants resulting in root rot and poor plant growth. Muckers Mulch will significantly improve clay soil. Adding a 25mm layer of Muckers Mulch to the surface of the soil will help break down the clay and improve the soil’s drainage.
We recently had some building work done which has affected the quality of the surrounding soil. What would you recommend?
Dry, sandy or stony soil is unable to retail moisture or give plants the nutrients they need. Digging in a 10mm layer of Muckers Mulch at any time of year will help the physical structure of the soil and its ability to retain moisture.
I want to start a vegetable garden. What products would you recommend?
Again this really depends on the condition of the soil you already have. But as a general rule we would advise using Magnum Compost topped off with Muckers Mulch. Because Magnum Compost is very rich it would benefit from being mixed with the sub-soil you already have.
How often do I need to apply Muckers Mulch?
We normally recommend applying the product twice a year. But the frequency will depend on the quality of the sub-soil and the depth of mulch you need to improve its condition. We are always pleased to offer advice so if you are in any doubt please contact us for further information.
I have a large area to cover. What is the most economical way to purchase the product?
All our products are available in 40 litre bags but if you have a suitable storage area and/or plan to use your compost straight away then the most economical way to buy the product is loose and in bulk. The minimum quantity for bulk delivery is the equivalent of 30 bags.
How much Muckers Mulch will I need?
Muckers Mulch is primarily designed to be used as a top dressing. We normally recommend you apply a depth of at least 1.5” which is thick enough to ensure that weeds cannot come through and retain sufficient moisture. But in addition to being an efficient weed-suppressing mulch this product can also be used as a general-purpose soil conditioner. So the actual amount you need will depend on the type of soil you have as well as the area you wish to cover. If you are in any doubt about the quantity you require please contact us for further assistance.
Why is Muckers Mulch better than pure horse manure?Although horse manure is one of the ingredients in Muckers Mulch the high temperature composting method we use eliminates any weed seeds which will remain in manure that has not undergone this process. So putting pure horse manure on your garden can easily result in the introduction of unwanted weeds.
